Compaq Presario 6000
With its 1.73-GHz Athlon XP 2100+ processor and 256MB of 266-MHz DDR memory, this Compaq Presario 6000 turned in a solid score of 116 on our PC WorldBench 4 tests--tying a Systemax Ascent MA17 with the same CPU and double the memory. With integrated NVidia graphics, this Presario's game-playing abilities were easily challenged. While our testers rated Quake III Arena quality as Good at all test resolutions up to 1280 by 1024 at 32-bit color, they rated Unreal Tournament at the same color depth just Satisfactory at 1024 by 768 resolution and dropped it to Unplayable at higher settings. The sound system had glitches as well: We noticed some distortion at high volume from the subwoofer of the Creative Labs Inspire 2.1 three-speaker set.
On the other hand, the thin, flat-panel satellite speakers delivered loud, crisp sound during our audio and DVD movie tests. The 17-inch Compaq FS 7550 CRT monitor that came with our test system rendered sharp, easily readable text at 1024 by 768 resolution in our test document and bright, rich colors and natural-looking flesh tones in our test photo. Though not top-of-the-line, the still speedy 32X/10X/40X CD-RW drive can handle data backups and burn music or video CDs--perhaps of a movie you've created with the bundled Pinnacle Studio 7 digital video editing software.Documentation includes setup posters for the system, speakers, and monitor, as well as a Getting Started guide with adequate troubleshooting and upgrading chapters. You can find more-detailed information on an included CD-ROM.The sharp black-and-silver minitower features a loop case lock and two front-mounted USB 1.1 ports (with four more on the back) and a front FireWire port (with two more on the back) for easily connecting peripherals.
This Compaq Presario 6000 provides more power than its price would suggest.
