Ncomputing plans to announce a new version of its virtualization device and software that turns a single desktop PC into 11 workstations, slashing the cost of computing for schools and businesses.

With the X550 desktop virtualization appliance and vSpace software, a single PC can be used by up to 11 people as long as they have their own mouse, keyboard and screen.

Ncomputing is slated to announce the X550 on Wednesday.

The new device will be an upgrade to the X300, which enabled a single PC to serve seven workstations. Ncomputing estimated that the device reduced the cost of computing to as low as $70 per workstation.

The Ncomputing device and virtualization software work by distributing the computing power of a desktop PC among several workstations. Most PCs today are far more powerful than the software people are using them for.

Pricing and availability for the X550 have not yet been announced. The company will reveal more details about the new device later this week.

Ncomputing opened as a company seeking to use virtualization to lower the cost of computing for organizations. Their devices and software have already been used set up one million people for computing, in 90 countries.
